• Oxalis triangularis •
The flowering false shamrock grows from a bulb and is often sold around St. Patrick’s Day. This plant with three triangular leaves is also known as the purple shamrock or wood sorrel and displays small white or pale pink flowers during spring and summer. Like other bulb-based plants, the false shamrock can go into dormancy a couple of times a year, especially if indoor temperatures rise above 80°F / 27°C. The false shamrock prefers temperatures between 60° and 70°F / 16° and 21°C. When the foliage dies off, stop watering and feeding the plant. Remove the dead leaves and stems, and the bulbs will begin to grow again in about two to four weeks. At this time, resume watering and feeding your plant.
step-by-step care
SOIL: Use good-quality all-purpose potting mix.
LIGHT: Place your false shamrock in bright light but not direct sun. Your plant can tolerate partial shade.
WATER: Water regularly, allowing the top 1 to 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Do not water when the plant has gone dormant (that is, when the foliage withers and dies off).
FERTILIZER: Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer once a month. Do not feed during dormancy.
TIP: Don’t be alarmed if your plant’s leaves close up. The false shamrock has a photonastic response, which means the leaves open during the daytime and close at night. If your leaves stay closed, try giving them a little more sunlight.
